I had to go run some errands the other day, so I piled in the car and went at it. I live up in Beachwood Canyon. It’s the neighborhood under the Hollywood sign for all you non California peeps. I drove south into Hollywood toward Modo, the yoga studio that I teach at when the world isn’t like it is now. What struck me as I passed the studio was how long it took me to get down there. So, I started to do some math… just to keep it somewhat simple, let’s say that pre-covid it took me 30 minutes from door to door to go to work with travel time, parking and all the other stuff that goes with commuting.
If you’re working from home like me, let’s say those were your stats too… just for our fun little game. So that’s an hour in travel a day, there and back. 5 days a week. Now, let’s just play the game that a magic vaccine isn’t gonna show up, save the day and get us moving again like we use to until maybe spring of 2021. Wait…uuuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Oh sorry… did I drift off for a second? Forgive me. Where was I?… Oh yeah, that it may be a solid 6 months from now and if you’re doing the math at home that would be 125 hours that isn’t spent commuting to work and back, give or take. The key word here is “spending”.
Time is the new currency of our lives. That’s why we talk about “spending” it. Because it’s valuable. You’ve been given a “time stimulus package”. Now with this new windfall of hours that you’ve just been granted, how will you spend it? You don’t have to get all agro about it and learn a new language or train yourself to do Wim Hof ice bath challenges, although that could be rad. You might spend it sleeping for an extra 30 minutes a day, reading that book that you’ve been dying to get into, maybe you… I’m gonna use the word… brace yourself… start meditating or maybe you get a bitchin’ dirt bike and practice doing wheelies.
My point is it doesn’t have to be profound. It just has to be valuable to you. You decide. You have the time now. The math doesn’t lie. You’ve been given a gift. How are you going to spend your 125 hours?
