The Target bags lilting over my work backpack with the sophisticated balance of a free-solo mountain climber. I’ve tucked the Gelson’s bags onto the floor of the passenger seat while the 2 faulty coffee kettle boxes stack themselves imposingly above the whole heap, looking down upon the mess with a steadfast judgement of the calamity below. As I pull up to my house, I look over to this Goliath of crap in my passenger seat and take pause. Like a real pause. And inside this minuscule beat, I ask myself “What do I grab first?” What would be the most efficient thing to grab in order to mitigate the amount of times I have to travel up and down the stairs?
In this moment of question, I froze. I didn’t know what to grab first. My mind turned to marble, frozen in time like David but not as jacked or cool. Just then the voice spoke again and said… “Just start.” It was telling me to just start grabbing shit and get this process going. Get moving. From inside this everyday mundane action sprung forth a profundity that rivals any I’ve ever experienced. JUST START!
Sometimes we get so stuck in the planning, procrastinating and outlining that we end up motionless for far longer than we should be. In certain/most situations we need to JUST START. It doesn’t have to be a triumphant huzzah that shakes the windows from the comfort of their frames and wins all kinds of awards but it can just be as understated as one literal step forward. If it doesn’t require training… just start. If you’re not going to hurt anyone… just start. If you’ve been convincing yourself why not to… JUST START. Move instead of sit. Act instead of think. Sometimes the actions will be just the thing you needed to jump start the “thinking”. Risk failure and JUST START.
That thing that you started thinking about since you started reading this… it’s time to… JUST START. Just start grabbing shit and figure out the deets on the way up the stairs.
