What would you grab?

I live in Beachwood Canyon here in LA. I walked out onto the patio this morning with my coffee and smelled the fires in the air. The moment the thin blanket of smoke wrapped around me and entered my lungs I heard a voice in my head say “what would you grab?” What would I grab if the fires rolled over the top of the Hollywood sign and tumbled their way down the hill toward my home?

I immediately thought of all my valuable stuff: My recording equipment downstairs, my camera equipment from the TLO room, passport, wallet, the usual “valuable” stuff. I then asked my wife what she would grab and the first thing out of her mouth was…”Rocco and his food” Rocco’s our dog, by the way. She’s a saint. Ugh. I’m the worst.

Why was my idea of valuables so much different than hers? I mean, of course I’d grab the dog but the stuff of monetary value jumped into my mind first. It was a good moment for me to hit a giant pause on all the stuff I’ve been focusing on lately and look at what was REALLY important. The stuff that matters, most likely, isn’t “stuff” at all. I guess my point is… take a minute and make a list of what is truly precious in your life and what is just stuff… what would you grab?
